Do you have a problem with the air quality in your home? Are you thinking about getting an air purifier?
Maybe you're dealing with pet dander, hair or unpleasant odors. Or you might want to get rid of smells from cigarettes or cooking. Maybe dust or pollen in the air are making you sick.
You just want relief, and you want your house to smell good again.
There are lots of air purifiers available these days. Some address specific air quality issues, and some are more broad in scope. Some can purify large areas, and some are designed to cover just one room.
The Winix WAC9500 True HEPA Air Cleaner with PlasmaWave Technology Ultimate Pet Model is designed for a single room.
It's one of the best air purifiers for pets, but it also gets rid of other pollutants and allergens. So that makes it a good general purpose air purifier, too.
In this review, we'll take a look at the features of the Winix 9500, how it works, what it removes from the air, and other details you'll want to know. We'll also talk about price, warranty, and where you can buy it.

What are the best features of the Winix WAC9500?
This air purifier has a lot of great things going for it. Here are some of the features that make it stand out:
True HEPA Filtration
It has a True HEPA filter, not a HEPA-type filter. It's able to capture 99.99% of pollutants, allergens, and pet dander in air, even particles as small as 0.3 microns.
A washable carbon filter targets pet odors plus smoke, cooking, and other odors.
The air first goes through a washable pre-filter that captures pet hair and other large particles like lint. The pre-filter extends the life of the HEPA filter, which saves you money.
The WAC9500 uses PlasmaWave technology to neutralize odors, gases, bacteria, and viruses in the air. This can help prevent spreading germs and improve your health.
Here's a video explaining how PlasmaWave technology works, if you'd like to learn more:
This machine has Smart Sensors that detect light, odor, and dust. It automatically adjusts the fan speed according to what's needed. So, if your dog walks by, guess what? The fan speeds up! That means you always get the purest air without having to bother with the settings. Plus, it doesn't run any faster than it needs to, and that saves energy.
This model has an easy to use and easy to read control panel. Or you can use the handy remote control if you don't want to have to get out of bed or walk across the room.
You can monitor the air quality and adjust the fan speed yourself or just set it on Auto. You can also switch the PlasmaWave feature on and off. An Auto Sleep setting dims the display panel and switches the fan to low when it gets dark.
There's also a Change Filter indicator to tell you when it's time to change the filters. You don't have to rely on your memory or note you wrote down and lost.
What does it remove from the air?
The Winix WAC9500 cleans the air of pollutants like these:
Pollen and Dust
This air purifier does a great job removing pollen and dust. Reviewers on Amazon say that their asthma attacks decreased dramatically after they started using it.
It also takes care of dust from cat litter boxes.
Mold and Mildew
It removes musty odors, and it works well to remove mold spores from the air. But, it's important that you deal with the source of the mold, too. Mold and mildew usually indicate a moisture problem. If you fix that, you'll have a lot less airborne mold spores to deal with.
Nobody wants their house to smell like stale cigarette smoke. The carbon filter does a great job of removing smoking odors within minutes.
We love our pets, but they can be pretty stinky sometimes. The Winix 9500 solves that problem. Reviewers with pets - rabbits, cats, dogs, fish, turtles, and even hedgehogs - said that it takes all the offensive odors out of the air.
The pre-filter does capture some of the pet hair that's floating in the air. You will still need to vacuum, though, especially if you have a large pet or more than one pet. But it does make a noticeable difference. You'll be amazed at how much it has caught when you clean the pre-filter.
Is it quiet?
Yes, it's whisper quiet on the lowest settings, so it's good for watching tv and for sleeping. Also, the light sensor automatically shifts it to a quieter setting at night. The Turbo setting is loud, but some people like loud ambient noise at night.
What are the dimensions?
It measures 16.5" x 8.9" x 21.9", and it weighs 13.7 pounds.
How big of an area does it cover?
This model can purify up to 283 square feet. It's perfect for a large bedroom or a family room.
Can I put the unit under a table?
It needs good air flow to work properly, so it's best not to put it under a table. The manufacturer says to put it a few feet away from the walls, too.
What is the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rating)?
The CADR is 142/138/145 for dust/smoke/pollen.
Does it come with filters?
It comes with three filters: a washable pre-filter, a washable carbon filter, and a True HEPA filter.
Can you buy a separate replacement HEPA filter?
No, the three filters come together as a set. Although the two washable ones can be reused, they do wear out and need to be replaced. Winix recommends replacing the filters about every 12 months, depending on usage.
Where can I buy replacement filters?
You can buy them from Winix or other online retailers, including Amazon.
Where are Winix air purifiers made?
They're made in South Korea, and they're distributed in the US by Winix America.
How do the Winix WAC 9500 and 5500 compare?
The WAC9500 and WAC5500 both have the auto adjust feature, and both have a True HEPA filter.
But, there are some important differences in the filters.
The 5500 does not have a pre-filter. It only has the carbon filter and HEPA filter. The carbon filter is not washable and needs to be replaced every 3 months.
Both have HEPA filters, but they're not the same. The 5500's filter is washable, but it can only be washed 6 times at most. After that, you have to replace it. It can last up to three years.
Also, the 5500 removes less airborne pollutants than the 9500 does (99.97% vs 99.99%).
Their capacity is different, too. The room size rating for the WAC9500 is 283 sq ft, while the WAC5500 is rated at 350 sq ft.
So, the 5500 covers a larger area, but it doesn't perform quite as well as the 9500.
What's the downside of this air purifier?
Of course, no air purifier is going to be perfect. This one has a lot of good points, but there are a few things that some people don't like about it.
First, the PlasmaWave feature tends to dry out the air. This can make asthma or breathing problems worse for some people. Also, if you have very sensitive hearing, you might notice a high pitched noise when the PlasmaWave is on. You can switch it off, though.
Second, the replacement filters are kind of expensive. You're going to pay somewhere around $100 for a replacement pack. They're most expensive if you buy them from the manufacturer. Home Depot has them for a little less on their website, but they don't sell them in-store.
The least expensive option is to buy knock-off brands at Amazon. You shouldn't have to replace them more than once a year, so that's about $8 or so per month for clean breathable air. When you look at it that way, it doesn't seem so bad.
Third, some people say the display light is too bright at night, and they wish you could turn it off. That may or may not bother you.
Where can I buy a Winix WAC9500?
You can buy it from the manufacturer, but their prices are the highest. At latest check, Amazon and Home Depot were selling it for around $200 - about 40% less than the price at Winix. Allergy Buyers Club, Target, and Sylvane were charging $60-$80 more than Amazon and Home Depot. All have free shipping.
I recommend Amazon. They almost always have the lowest price on everything, and they're a well-known and trusted business. And if you have Amazon Prime, you can get free 2-day or maybe even same day shipping.
Prices at Amazon are subject to change without notice. That's why you don't see a price quote in this review. It's easy enough to find out the current price, though.
You can find the current price of the Winix WAC9500 at Amazon by clicking here.
What kind of warranty does it have?
It has a 1-year limited warranty from the date of purchase. If it's defective, Winix will repair or replace the product.
The Winix WAC 9500 is an excellent choice for anyone who needs a one room air purifier. The carbon odor control filter does a great job of clearing the air of bad smells. The HEPA filter gets rid of the dust, pollen and pet dander that make allergy sufferers so miserable. It's also easy to set up and easy to use.
Amazon reviews are a pretty reliable measure of how good a product is. This model has over 600 Amazon reviews and a star rating of 4.5 out of 5. That's a darn good rating! And that's from people who have bought and used it.
There are more expensive air purifiers out there, for sure. But this one is affordable, and it does the job. And the manufacturer backs it up with a 1-year warranty, so there's really no risk in trying it out.
