What are the key features of the SimPure Y7P-BW?
Countertop filtration system plus dispenser
The SimPure Y7P-BW reverse osmosis filter is an all-in-one system that sits on the countertop. Unlike traditional reverse osmosis systems with multiple bulky parts, it won’t take up any space under your kitchen sink.
It also includes a built-in dispenser, so there’s no faucet to install like you have with under-the-sink models.
The dispenser is located high enough for filling most reusable water bottles. There’s also a removable drip tray to set your glass or bottle on to catch stray drops of water.
I found that it does splatter a little bit when filling a glass, but that’s not any different than what happens when I use my refrigerator’s water dispenser.
To fill a larger container like a pitcher or saucepan, you can slide the drip tray away and set the container on the counter under the dispenser. This is a helpful feature because the tray is sized for a glass or bottle, and anything bigger can’t balance on it and could tip over.
4-stage purification
Reverse osmosis systems are always made up of several parts, called stages. The number of stages can vary between models.
This model has four stages:
PP membrane - You could call this polypropylene membrane a “pre-filter”. It filters out sediment like rust and dirt, which helps to protect the RO membrane. It’s made of BPA free plastic.
CTO filter - “CTO” stands for “Chlorine, Taste and Odor”. This is a solid block activated carbon filter, and it ensures that the water tastes and smells clean.
RO membrane - A reverse osmosis membrane has tiny pores that keep contaminants from passing through. It effectively blocks protozoa, bacteria, viruses, and chemical contaminants. After this stage, the water is pure and toxin-free.
UV light - A UV light prevents microbes from growing in the purified water tank. It activates when you start up the system and during filtering. Then, it turns on at 20 minute intervals after the filtering is done. That means you don’t have to worry about nasty stuff growing in the tank that holds your drinking water. It stays fresh.
The first two stages are combined in one cartridge, called the “CF Filter”, and the RO membrane is housed in the “RO Filter” cartridge.
Touch screen display panel
All the controls and indicators are located on an easy-to-read display panel on the top of the unit.
The display will tell you when you need to add more water to the tank and when you need to change out the filters. It’ll also let you know when there’s not enough pure water in the reservoir to dispense, so you’ll need to wait a few minutes for the system to filter more.
There are also indicators that tell you when the system is flushing itself, when it’s filtering, and when the UV light is operating.
Buttons for dispensing the purified water are located on the display panel, too. You can dispense 180 ml, 350ml, or 450ml (6, 12, or 15 ounces) of water at a touch of a button.
If you need more than that, you can press the “Flushing” button for a continuous flow.
Efficient wastewater recycling
All reverse osmosis systems waste some water because the blocked contaminants have to go somewhere.
With conventional under-the-sink models, the wastewater goes straight down the drain. But the SimPure Y7P-BW recycles the wastewater by sending it back through the filtration process. After it finishes filtering an entire tank, a small amount of wastewater remains in the tank and you just dump it out before refilling it.
The amount of wastewater a system generates is referred to as the wastewater ratio. It tells you how many gallons of water are wasted for each gallon of pure water produced. For example, if the ratio is 1:4, that means for each gallon of filtered water, four gallons are wasted.
Most conventional systems waste between two and four gallons per gallon of filtered water. That’s a lot of wasted water!
Here’s where Y7P-BW really shines. Its wastewater ratio is 4:1. In other words, for every four gallons of purified water, only one gallon is wasted! Or, you could say that for each gallon of filtered water, one fourth of a gallon is wasted.
That’s quite a difference!
Automatic filtering
When you fill the water tank, the filtration begins automatically. Water is sent through the system to be held in the pure water reservoir.
Once the pure water level gets too low to dispense, the system automatically starts filtering and transferring more purified water to the reservoir. It’ll keep doing this until the water in the tank is used up.
At that point, the “Change Water” indicator will let you know that you need to pour out the wastewater in the tank and refill it with fresh tap water.
How big is it and how much water does it hold?
The SimPure 7YP-BW countertop system measures 18” L x 8” W x 17” H. It can easily fit on the kitchen counter with room to spare underneath your kitchen cabinets.
It runs off electricity, so you’ll need to locate it near an electrical outlet. You’ll also want to position it so that you can easily get to the holding tank, which is located in the back of the unit.
The holding tank holds 1.3 gallons, and the pure water reservoir holds 0.45 gallons. So that means that the most filtered water you can dispense at one time is about a half gallon. It only takes about five minutes to filter and refill the reservoir, though.
What contaminants does the SimPure Y7P-BW remove?
This is the most important question you could ask about any water filtration system. After all, that’s why you’re thinking about buying one, right?
Well, you’re going to love the answer!
The Y7P-BW removes up to 99% of common chemical contaminants, bacteria, viruses, and protozoa from tap water. Because the reverse osmosis membrane is paired with the CF filter, you can be sure that your water is also free of chlorine, dirt, VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), bad tastes, and odors.
It’s really, really clean, and tastes amazing! My tap water, which is from a well, doesn’t taste bad, but I can definitely tell the difference after running it through the Y7P-BW.
I also tested the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) level of my tap water before and after running it through the filter. Straight from the tap, it measured 41 ppm, and after filtering, it was 7 ppm. This would account for the difference in taste.
You should know, too, that because it’s a reverse osmosis system, the Y7P-BW will remove beneficial minerals from your water. That can make your water slightly more acidic, but not enough to bother most people.
Third party lab test results for this filtration system are available at the SimPure website, which you can see and download here. They didn’t test for every single known contaminant, but they did cover many that people are most concerned about.
Here’s a partial list of contaminants along with the percentage removed, which I have taken from the report:

If you take a look at the report, you’ll see that for all of the contaminants listed, the removal rate exceeded the NSF/ANSI Standard 58 for reverse osmosis drinking water treatment systems.
How long do the filters last?
On average, both the CF and RO filters last about six months. This can vary, based on the quality of the tap water you put into it and how much water you use on a daily basis.
The CF and RO indicators on the display panel will light up when it’s time to replace the filters. This is based on the volume of water that’s gone through the system, not on the length of time that’s passed.
Changing a filter is easy. You just take out the water tank, then twist and lift out the filter cartridge. Then, position the new one and give it a twist to lock it in place.

How hard is it to install a SimPure Y7P-BW RO system?
Here’s the good news - there’s no installation at all! The system is completely self-contained and ready to go when you take it out of the box.
You will need to flush the system before you use it for the first time (and whenever you replace the cartridges). That’s standard for every kind of water filter out there.
This involves filtering and disposing of a full tank of tap water, three to five times. It’s simple to do, but it takes an hour or so.
Detailed instructions are in the user manual. You’ll want to be sure to read it carefully and follow the instructions. It’s not hard, but there are a lot of steps, so take your time and do exactly as it says.
How do you operate a SimPure Y7P-BW?
Filtering and dispensing pure great-tasting water couldn’t be much simpler.
The first thing you do is fill the water tank with potable tap water. Simply lift the tank out of the back of the unit, fill it up, and carefully put it back in place.
This can be a little awkward, depending on where the unit is located. You’ll want to keep it somewhere where it’s easy to get at the back.
Once the tank is in place, the system will automatically flush the RO membrane and then begin filtering and sending water to the pure water reservoir.
While flushing, the “Flushing” button will light up. Likewise, while it’s filtering, the “Filtering” indicator will be on.
To dispense water, put your container under the dispenser and touch the button for the amount you want - either 180 ml, 360 ml, or 450 ml. (I wish it were in ounces, but I guess it’s an opportunity to learn metric!)
TIP: Use a light touch with the buttons. The first time I used it, I pressed too hard, and I thought it wasn’t working. Touch, don’t press!
If you want to dispense more than the preset volumes, touch the “Flushing” button. The water will flow out until you touch any button or until the pure water tank is emptied.
When there’s not enough water left in the pure water reservoir to dispense, the “Pure Water Shortage” indicator will start flashing, and the system will start filtering more water. You have to wait for the “Pure Water Shortage” indicator to turn off before you can dispense more water.
You’ll know it’s time to refill the tank when you hear 10 beeps, and the “Change Water” indicator flashes on and off. Take out the tank, dump out the wastewater, and start all over again.
What kind of maintenance will I need to do?
Just like with any other appliance, you’ll need to do some periodic maintenance to keep the Y7P-BW working efficiently.
Once a day: The manufacturer recommends emptying and refilling the feed tank once a day, even if you don’t use up all the water. That’s because wastewater collects in there and can leave a residue if it sits around too long.
Once a month: Thoroughly clean the feed water tank. It’s not hard and doesn’t take long. All you need is a small brush and water to do it.
Periodically: Every now and then you will need to descale the unit. Minerals from your water tend to build up in the system and can keep it from working properly. This could be anywhere from two weeks to six months, depending on your tap water.
If the water flow rate slows down and/or all the indicator lights keep flashing, this is a sign that it’s time to descale.
Descaling is done by running either a citric acid solution or white vinegar solution through the system. There are clear instructions for how to do this in the user manual.
