Got Allergies? Get a Honeywell True HEPA Air Purifier

If you need a room air purifier to get rid of allergens in your home or office, it's hard to beat a Honeywell.

More allergists recommend Honeywell air purifiers than any other brand.

Consumer Reports loves Honeywell air purifiers, too. Their 2016 top pick for portable room air purifiers is the Honeywell HPA300 True HEPA Allergen Remover.

Why?

black Honeywell HPA300 air purifier

Because it does a great job of removing smoke and dust, it's easy to use, and it's quiet.

The HPA300 is just one of a family of True HEPA air purifiers made by Honeywell. In this review, we'll take a close look at the HPA300 and then compare it to the smaller members of the family.

And we'll meet the new "smartie" in the family, the Honeywell Bluetooth Smart Air Purifier.

What are the Best Features of the Honeywell HPA300 HEPA Air Purifier?

This powerful air purifier is rated to cover 465 square feet. That's the size of a large room. One reviewer on Amazon said that it did a great job in a room that was 900 square feet!

You'll notice lots of air movement when you use it. It circulates the air up to 5 times every hour. That means that it's working to keep your air clean and fresh.

It's powerful, but it's quiet. It's not going to interfere with sleeping or watching TV.

An easy to use control panel puts you in charge. You can choose from 3 air cleaning levels or Turbo Clean to suit your needs.

A lot of people start it out on Turbo and then lower the speed to keep the air allergen-free.

If you like, you can set the timer for 2, 4, or 8 hours, or just let it run continuously. The control panel also tells you when it's time to replace the filters.

Do you have a hard time sleeping when there's light in the room? You'll like this: there's a dimmer option on the control panel to adjust the brightness of the LED display. The light isn't going to keep you awake a night.

The device measures about 22 x 14 x 24 inches, and it weighs about 25 pounds. It has a nice design, and it's black, so it blends in with the surroundings in any room. It also has built-in handles, so it's easy to move to a new location. You will need to keep it on the floor, though.

Are There Any Negative Points?

One negative is that you'll have to replace the filters on a regular basis, and that can get expensive. After a couple of years, you will have spent more on replacement filters than what the whole thing cost to begin with.

Another problem some users have reported is that sometimes the front grille gets loose, and it's easy to knock off by accident.

What Does the HPA300 Remove From the Air?

There are two stages of filtration that the air goes through in this device.

First, the carbon pre-filter gets rid of bad odors and captures large particles like dust, lint, and pet hair.

Then the HEPA filter removes up 99.97% of airborne particles that are 0.3 microns or larger. Those particles are allergens like pollen, dust, smoke, mold spores, and pet dander. The HEPA filter also helps to get rid of airborne germs and VOCs.

How Does the Air Flow Through It?

This is an important question because the answer determines where you can put it.

The air intake is in the front of the device and it goes out through the top. So you don't want to place it under anything that would restrict the air flow.

What Is the CADR?

The CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) tells you the volume of air that the device can filter. The higher the numbers, the faster the cleaner can work.

The HPA300's CADR is 300/320/300 for dust/smoke/pollen. That's an excellent rating!

How Often Do the Filters Need to be Replaced?

You'll need to replace the HEPA filter every 3-5 years and the carbon pre-filter every 3 months.

They're simple to install and remove. Just open the front grille, put them in place, and close it back up.

Does It Produce Ozone?

No. HEPA filters don't produce ozone.

Does It Have a Warranty?

Yes, it does. Honeywell offers a 5-year warranty on this air purifier.

How Does the HPA300 Compare to the Honeywell 50250-S?

First of all, the 50250-S only covers 390 square feet, and the HPA300 covers 465 square feet.

The 50250-S is round and measures 18 x 18 x 20 inches. The HPA300 is 22 x 14 x 24 inches, but it takes up less floor space.

The HPA300 is quieter but you have to replace the filters more often - 3 to 5 times per year versus once a year for the 50250-S.

When it comes to energy efficiency, the HPA300 is the winner.

It draws 30% less power than the 50250-S: 133 watts on Turbo Clean for the HPA300 versus 180 watts on high for 50250-S.

How Much Does the HPA300 Cost?

You can usually get the best price at Amazon. Prices can change at a moments, notice, though. That's why  it's not included in this review.

What Are the Other Models in the Honeywell HPA Series?

There are three other models that are similar to the HPA300 except for the size. They all work in the same way and they remove the same types of pollutants from the air. They all look the same except for the HPA160 Tower, which is taller and skinnier.

Here they are, going from largest to smallest:

We don't want to leave out the newest (and smartest) member of the HPA family:

Honeywell HPA250B Bluetooth Smart True HEPA Allergen Remover

This model works like all the others, but it uses new Smart Technology to make your life easier.

You can download an app and operate the HPA250B from your iPhone or Android device from up to 30 feet away. It's great if you're in bed or watching tv and don't want to have to get up to change the settings.

Besides turning it off and on and changing the speed, you can set custom schedules using the app. Plus it has an automatic shut-off timer that goes from 1 to 18 hours. It'll remind you to change your filters, too.

If you have seasonal allergies, you'll love the Auto-Set function that adjusts the speed according to the outdoor pollen levels where you live.

The dimensions are about 19 x 18 x 10 inches.

It covers rooms up to 310 sq ft, and the CADR is 190/200/180 (dust/ smoke/ pollen).

Conclusion

Any of these Honeywell air purifiers would be a great investment in your health. They do the job of getting allergens out of the air so you can breathe freely. They're easy to use, and they're quiet.

And with a 5-year warranty, there's really no risk.

You'll just need to figure out how big of an area you need to cover, and choose the model that can handle it.

Of course, if you want to be able to operate it from your phone, you'll want to choose the HPA250B. But only if the room is 310 square feet or less.

All of the models are available to purchase for a great price today at Amazon. I always recommend Amazon because they usually have the lowest prices plus free shipping. They have secure ordering and hassle-free returns, too.
