If you're a health conscious parent, you make sure your kids drink plenty of clean filtered water at home. But what about when they're away from home?

You never know what might be in the water they're getting at school or from public water fountains. Well, here's the solution you've been looking for - a kid-size, kid-friendly water bottle with a built-in filter!

The new Clearly Filtered Junior filtered water bottle is perfect for children of all ages. It's great for travel, outings, school, or when they're visiting friends. The insulated stainless steel construction keeps their water cold all day. And, best of all, it can give you peace of mind knowing that the water they're drinking is safe and toxin free.

Clearly Filtered is a well-known and reputable US manufacturer of water filtration systems for the home. I've written about several of their products already, and I think they're excellent.

Clearly Filtered Junior Water Bottle Features

Advanced Filtration Technology

The Junior water bottle uses the exact same filtration technology as the Clearly Filtered pitcher filter and undersink filter.

Affinity Filtration's unique design gives it the power to target more than 232 contaminants (including lead and fluoride) that might be lurking in tap water.

So you can be confident that your child is drinking great tasting and safe water.

You can learn more about Affinity Filtration at the Clearly Filtered website.

High Quality Materials

Everything about this water bottle shouts quality

The insulated stainless steel bottle has a matte finish, which makes it easy to grip and prevents sweating. Plus, it can keep water cold for up to 24 hours, too!

It comes in four colors: blue, pink, charcoal, and Tiffany blue (which looks more like green to me).

All of the plastic parts are BPA, BPS and phthalate free. That includes the lid, mouthpiece, and filter.

Designed for Kids

A lot of thought went into the design of this water bottle to make it well-suited for children. If you're a parent, you'll appreciate these features.

First, the size. It's just 7.5" high (including the handle) and 3" in diameter, and it holds about 12 ounces of water - perfect for kid-sized hands. And, it's small enough to stow in a backpack.

I do want to point out that the filter displaces some of the water when you put it in. So it holds more like 11 ounces, not 12.

A built-in handle on the lid makes it easy to carry or clip on a carabiner. A non-slip silicone boot on the bottom half helps protect the stainless steel from dents. It also keeps it from sliding on slick surfaces.

The mouthpiece is easy to flip open and shut - even for toddlers - and it doesn't take a lot of effort to suck the water up through the straw.

Now, you might wonder why there's no silicone bite valve on this model. That's intentional - no removal parts means no choking hazards. It also makes it easier to clean and less likely to grow mold.

Contaminant Reduction

Even more important than the kid-friendly design (in my opinion) is the filter's ability to remove 99.9% of many different contaminants from your child's drinking water.

Here's just a sampling of what it targets:

  • chlorine and chloramine
  • fluoride
  • lead
  • mercury
  • microplastics
  • BPA
  • glyphosate
  • pesticides
  • PFAS
  • chromium-6
  • arsenic

This filter is designed to be used with tap water from a municipal source or well. It will significantly reduce bacteria, cysts, and microorganisms, but those contaminants are typically not present in tap water.

You can access the lab test results for the filter here.

First Impressions

I had one of these bottles shipped to my 2-1/2 year old grandson, William, so he could try it out. Then I asked my daughter to give me her feedback. (By the way, she's a "crunchy mom" and very particular about what her son eats and drinks and the types of products they use in their home.)

She thinks it's a high quality product, and she likes the non-slip finish. She was surprised that there was no bite valve and wasn't sure if William would like the hard plastic mouthpiece.

But, he took to it immediately. He likes flipping the mouthpiece up and down and doesn't have any trouble drinking from it. And, since he's able to take the lid off, he can refill it himself. A big plus for a little kid who's learning to be independent!

I also checked it out when I was at their house, and I was impressed. The only fault I could see was that it won't fit in William's car seat cup holder when the silicone boot is on. It's just a wee bit too big. If you take the boot off, it fits in just fine. And it does fit in the regular car cup holders with the boot on.

Filter Life and Replacement

You will need to replace the filter every now and then. It's made to last for 25 gallons, or about 160 fill-ups. So, if you fill it twice a day, it'll last 2 to 3 months.

Changing the filter is simple. Just screw off the old filter and screw on the new one.

What's in the Box

When you buy one of these, you'll get the bottle plus one filter and instructions.

Clearly Filtered Junior water bottle, disasssembled

Give your child a Junior bottle from Clearly Filtered and give yourself some peace of mind.

Before using it the first time, you should wash the bottle and lid before attaching the filter. The instructions say to soak the filter for 30 minutes before using it.

You can soak it in a bowl of water before screwing on the filter. But I just filled the bottle and attached the lid with the filter and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then I dumped out the water and refilled for the first use. You only have to do this the first time you use it.

Warranty

Clearly Filtered offers a lifetime warranty on all their products. So if you ever have any trouble with it, give them a call. Their customer service is excellent.

How Does It Compare?

It's hard to find filtered water bottles made for kids. In fact, I only know of two other brands. Here's a rundown of how they compare to the Clearly Filtered Junior.

LifeStraw Play vs Clearly Filtered

If you want a filtered water bottle your kid can use for hiking or camping, you might consider the LifeStraw Play with Lead Reduction. It removes bacteria and parasites (but not viruses).

So, LifeStraw claims, you can use it for any kind of water, including lakes and streams.

For the most part, it removes the same contaminants as the Clearly Filtered Junior, but it does not remove fluoride or PFAS

See the LifeStraw Play at Amazon.

Instead of a flip-up straw, this one has a leakproof twist-off lid and a silicone mouthpiece that you suck like a straw. That means it takes two hands to open and close every time you take a drink.

So, it's not nearly as convenient to use as the Clearly Filtered, in my opinion.

The bottle is made of BPA free plastic, so it won't keep the water cold. And it holds 10 ounces of water - a little less than the Clearly Filtered Junior.

Both brands are in the same general price range and the filter life is comparable - 25 gallons for Clearly Filtered and 26 gallons for LifeStraw.

There are two parts to the LifeStraw filter, though. The carbon filter - which removes lead and heavy metals - lasts for 26 gallons, but the other part lasts for 500 gallons. You'd have to come up with a way of keeping track of that.

To sum up, the LifeStraw is good for filtering water from questionable sources, but for normal tap water, Clearly Filtered is the clear winner.

Brita Soft Squeeze vs Clearly Filtered

You might be interested in Brita's Soft Squeeze water bottle for kids if all you care about is taking out chlorine and making the water taste better. Because that's all it does.

This model is NSF certified only for chlorine, and it should only be used with treated tap water.

See the Brita Soft Squeeze at Amazon.

There's a pull-up mouthpiece on the lid, and the bottle is squeezable, which makes it easier to suck up the water. It's made of BPA free plastic, and it holds about 13 ounces of water.

The filter life is 40 gallons, but the replacement filters cost a lot more than the original bottle (check the current price of replacements at Amazon). It would be more economical - though not as environmentally friendly - to just throw it out and buy a new one.
